Vehicle Registration
Active-duty military personnel, and military dependents, have the option to maintain Ohio registration on a vehicle while stationed outside of Ohio or deployed overseas. This includes registering a new vehicle purchased out of state, renewing current registration, or replacing a registration sticker or plate. Please review the guidelines for each available service below.
Qualifications
- Vehicle purchased, or previously titled/registered, outside of Ohio.
- A social security number or Ohio driver license or ID.
Restrictions
- Social security number is blocked by a suspension and/or registration block.
Documents Needed
- Ohio Certificate of Title or Memorandum of Title (original).
- BMV 4625 Application for Registration by Mail.
- BMV 5712 Affidavit for Registration (required for trucks or vans ONLY).
- Leased vehicles require the following:
- BMV 5736 Power of Attorney (required if leasing company is not listed here).
- Lease agreement signed by the lease company (photocopy acceptable, documents will not be returned.)
- Required documentation for a selected Military License Plate (if applicable).
- E-check required for most (or many) vehicles 6 to 25 years old and owned by residents of the following counties must be tested every two years:
- Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit

Process
- Mail all necessary documents to Vehicle Information Services to the address provided on the Application with a check or money order to cover fees.
- Allow 3-4 weeks for processing to receive the plates and registration sticker, shipped separately, in the mail.

Eligibility
- Ohio license plate number.
- A social security number or Ohio driver license or ID.
- Current residential address and/or mailing address on file.
- Changes to an address will require the creation of an OHID Account. If unable to create an account the mailing option will have to be used.
Restrictions
- Temporary tags cannot be renewed.
- The license plate or social security number is blocked by a suspension and/or registration block.
- Any license plates which are free, has reduced fees, or requires documentation for renewal cannot be completed online and the mailing option must be used.
Documents Needed
- E-check required for most (or many) vehicles 6 to 25 years old and owned by residents of the following counties must be tested every two years:
- Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit

- A confirmation email receipt will be sent to you after completion of the online registration transaction.
- Allow 10-15 business days to receive your vehicle registration and/or new license plate(s), shipped separately, in the mail.
