Add Motorcycle Endorsement
In Ohio, active-duty service members, and prior service within 6 months of separation, may be eligible to waive the motorcycle knowledge written test and/or skills test for a motorcycle license or endorsement if they have successfully completed an out-of-state motorcycle safety course. There are two options to choose from, depending on whether the individual is physically residing in Ohio or is currently stationed or deployed outside of the state.
Qualifications for Skills Test Exemption
- Current active-duty service member or prior service member within 6 months from date of separation.
- Physically residing in Ohio.
- Meet the criteria of at least one of the following statements below:
- Currently hold an Ohio license or ID card that is either valid or expired 6 months or less.
OR - Held an Ohio license or ID card when joining the military.
- Successfully completed a motorcycle safety course that qualifies as a skill waiver class and is presented within one year of the passing date.
- Currently hold an Ohio Motorcycle Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC).
Documents Needed
- Course completion certificate from a qualifying motorcycle safety class.
- Valid Ohio Motorcycle TIPIC.
- Proof of military status (such as a valid Military ID or DD214 showing separation within 6 months).
Process
- Convert current driver license to Ohio if currently licensed in another state and expired less than 6 months.
- Obtain an Ohio Motorcycle TIPIC
- Email all required documentation to Motorcycle Ohio at mogen@dps.ohio.gov with the subject line: Motorcycle Endorsement/Reciprocity.
- Receive denial/approval verification via email.
- Visit the nearest BMV deputy registrar license agency to purchase the motorcycle endorsement or license.

Qualifications for Knowledge and Skills Test Exemption

- Currently stationed or deployed outside of Ohio.
- Meet the criteria of at least one of the following statements below:
- Currently hold an Ohio license or ID card that is either valid or expired 6 months or less.
OR - Held an Ohio license or ID card when joining the military.
- Successfully completed a motorcycle safety course that qualifies as a skill waiver class and is presented within one year of the passing date.
- Meet the qualifications for renewing, or purchasing a duplicate of, an Ohio driver license via either the online Military Renewal/Duplicate process or the Out of State Military Packet by mail.
- An application to either renew an Ohio license, or purchase a duplicate, will be required. The endorsement will be added to the license as part of this transaction.
Documents Needed
- Course completion certificate from a qualifying motorcycle safety class.
- Proof of military status (such as a valid Military ID, current LES, or DD214 showing separation within past 6 months).
Process
- Review the Driver License/ID Card Renewal and Duplicate section for military personnel to determine eligibility for adding the endorsement either online or by mail
- Follow the steps for either the online or by mail option to complete an application.
- Include your course completion certificate from a qualifying motorcycle safety class with the application
