    Driver License/ID Renewal & Duplicate

    Active-duty military personnel, dependents, and veterans separated within 6 months have the option to renew an Ohio driver license or ID card, or request a duplicate license or ID, either online or by mail, depending on specific qualifications and restrictions. To determine the best option for your situation, please review the guidelines for each method below.

    Qualifications

    • Active-duty service member, service member’s dependent, or separated within 6 months.
    • A United States citizen or Permanent Resident (Green Card holder).
    • Currently stationed or deployed outside of the state of Ohio.
    • Renewing a Class D license or identification card.
      • Commercial Driver License renewals may be eligible for the renewal by mail option below.

    Restrictions – Online Renewal is Not Available (may still be eligible by mail)

    • Not within 90 days of expiration (Credentials outside of 90 days will be processed as a Duplicate and the expiration date will not change).
    • Upgrading to a Real-ID compliant credential.
      • First issuance of a Compliant license or ID must be done in-person and cannot be completed online or by mail.
    • Changes to personal information such as a name (address changes are permitted).
    • Changes to endorsements and/or restrictions (Exception: motorcycle endorsement. Please see Add Motorcycle Endorsement for military personnel).
    • Credential is suspended, has reinstatement fees, and/or has blocks (cannot renew online or by mail).
    • OH/ID account is required.

    Documents Needed

    • Copy of valid Military ID or Military Dependent ID (the NEW Military Dependent ID Card requires copy of front and back of card).
    • Proof of military Service: current or issued within the last 90 days.
      • DD-214, LES, Leave Papers, or other forms of official government documentation.
    • BMV 2407 Vision Examination For Out-Of-State Driver License Applicants.
    • Color copy of an I-551 (green card) front and back if not a US citizen.
    • Course completion certificate from a qualifying motorcycle safety class (if adding a motorcycle endorsement).
    • United States Passport Photo meeting federal guidelines. Image must be:
      • 2 x 2 inches
      • Color
      • On plain white background
      • Digital image in .jpg format.
        • Clear, high quality photo resolution scan or original digital version of the photo.
        • Cannot be a picture of the photo and do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters, or artificial intelligence.

    Process

    • Create an OH/ID account.
      • If unable to create an account, and stationed or deployed outside of the state of Ohio, refer to the By Mail instructions to request an Out of State Renewal Packet.
      • Gather the needed documents in digital format before starting application.
    • Completion of application:
      • Application will be terminated after six (6) months of submission if process is not completed properly or payment of application fee is not received.
      • If the application is denied, you will receive a detailed email that explains the reason for denial and how to resolve the issue. If it is unable to be resolved online it will be necessary to request a packet for renewal by mail.
    • Allow up to 28 days to receive the credential by mail after final payment is made and the transaction has been approved.

    Qualifications

    • Active-duty service member, service member’s dependent, or separated within 6 months.
    • Renewing a Class A, B, C or D license or identification card.
    • Currently stationed or deployed outside of the state of Ohio.
    • A United States citizen or Permanent Resident (Green Card holder).
    • Meet the criteria of at least one of the following statements below:
      • Currently hold an Ohio license or ID card that is either valid or expired 6 months or less.

        OR

      • Held an Ohio license or ID card when joining the military.

    Restrictions – Renewal by Mail Not Available

    • Credentials outside of 90 days from expiration will be processed as a Duplicate and the expiration date will not change unless the applicant specifies that they need to renew early on the application.
    • Upgrading to a Compliant Real-ID status.
      • First issuance of a Compliant license or ID must be done in-person and cannot be completed online or by mail.
    • Credential is suspended, has reinstatement fees, and/or has blocks (cannot renew online or by mail).

    Documents Needed

    • Copy of valid Military ID or Military Dependent ID (the NEW Military Dependent ID Card requires copy of front and back of card).
    • Proof of military Service: current or issued within the last 90 days.
      • DD-214, LES, Leave Papers, or other forms of official government documentation.
    • If updating name: marriage certificate or license, certified copy of court ordered name change, Decree of Divorce.
    • Out of State license must be included with packet if currently licensed in another state.
    • Course completion certificate from a qualifying motorcycle safety class (if adding a motorcycle endorsement).
    • BMV 2407 Vision Examination For Out-Of-State Driver License Applicants.
    • Color copy of an I-551 (green card) front and back if not a US citizen.

    Process

    • Request the Out of State Renewal or Duplicate Packet.
      • Chat, email, or speak with a customer service representative by calling (844) 644-6268.
      • The packet can be mailed to an in-state address but the credential will be mailed to an out of state address included in the returned application.
      • Allow 7-10 days to receive the packet in the mail.
    • Gather copies of the needed documents while waiting to receive the packet.
    • Complete the application and mail back to the BMV will all required documents.
      • Submit copies of any needed documentation as the documents will not be returned.
    • Allow up to 3-4 weeks for processing.
      • If application is denied for any reason a letter will be mailed to the requested out of state mailing address explaining the reason for denial and how to resolve the issue.
      • If no notification received within 30 days you can check on the status by speaking with a customer service representative by calling (844) 644-6268.
    • Receive credential by mail.
      • Allow up to 28 days to receive the credential in the mail from the time the packet is approved. An additional 1-2 weeks may apply if the credential If being mailed to an international address.
