Removal of Social Security Numbers from BMV Vehicle Registration Renewal Notice

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1:

Why has my Social Security number/tax ID been removed from my vehicle registration renewal notice?

A1:

House Bill 13, effective August 19, 2008, requires the removal of the printed Social Security number on the vehicle registration renewal notification.  In addition, there will no longer be any other identifier such as tax identification number printed on the notice at this time.

This change has resulted in the development of a new registration renewal notice which leaves a blank where the social security/tax identification number/etc. used to be.

Q2:

I just got my renewal notice and it is after August 19th, the effective date of House Bill 13 which required the removal of the printed Social Security number.  Why is my social security number still on my vehicle registration renewal notice?

A2:

All mailings sent after August 19 will have the Social Security number removed.  If your renewal notice was sent before this date it will still contain the pre-printed Social Security number.
