Taxing Districts Get Some Help From BMV

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is using a new program that assists in the distribution of money to taxing districts throughout Ohio.

The BMV is using a geographical reference system to verify addresses and assign taxing districts.  The correct taxing district is important to collect and distribute license and permissive tax fees.

The system was implemented in two phases. In the first phase, the computer program sorted and corrected existing files so that renewals will reflect the correct taxing district. One-third of the files will be corrected each year. Initially, taxing districts may experience some fluctuation in revenue.

The second phase identifies the correct taxing district at the time a new vehicle registration is issued or when an individual changes his/her address. The new system has been tested with a 98 percent accuracy rate of those addresses recognized by the system. Misspellings of street addresses or an unrecognizable address prevent the system to be 100 percent accurate.

Taxing districts throughout Ohio have welcomed the new system.
