Written Examination

Ohio Administrative Code Section 4501:1-1-08


An applicant must pass a written test that is given in two parts and covers Ohio motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs.

A. Motor Vehicle Regulations Portion of Written Test

  1. Minimum of 20 multiple choice questions equally weighted

  2. Must correctly answer 75% or 15 questions to pass this portion of the test.

  3. Questions cover:

  1. Motor vehicle laws;

  2. Rules of the road pertaining to safety;

  3. Regulations of the B.M.V. as prescribed by the director of public safety.

B. Traffic Signs Portion of Written Test

  1. Minimum of 20 multiple choice questions equally weighted

  2. Must correctly answer 75% or 15 questions to pass this portion of the test.

  3. Questions cover:

    1. Highway warnings and traffic signs

    2. Signaling devices and directions given in the English language.

C. Reference Document for test material.

"Digest of Motor Vehicle Laws" which can be obtained at any Deputy Registrar office. See County Lists.

D. CDL Written Test

  1. Minimum of 50 questions equally weighted

  2. Must correctly answer 80% or 40 questions to pass this portion of the test.

  3. Questions cover General commercial driver knowledge
